Grant Opportunities

Gannett Foundation Community Action Grants (Deadline: February 16)
The Gannett Foundation supports local organizations in communities served by Gannett Co., Inc. Community Action Grant priorities include education and neighborhood improvement, economic development, youth development, community problem-solving, assistance to disadvantaged people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment. The average grant amount is in the $1,000 to $5,000 range. Proposals should be submitted to the contact at the daily newspaper or television station in your area by February 16th or August 17th. STOP Hunger Scholarships (Deadline: February 18)

The Sodexo Foundation seeks applicants for the STOP Hunger Scholarships to recognize students in the fight against hunger in America. More than 49 million people are at risk of hunger, including nearly 17 million children. The Sodexo Foundation works to ensure that every child in the U.S., especially those most at risk, grows up with dependable access to enough nutritious food to enable them to lead a healthy, productive life. The STOP Hunger Scholarships recognize and reward students who have made a significant impact in the fight against hunger in the United States.

Huggable Heroes Awards (Deadline: February 28)

The Huggable Heroes program recognizes young leaders between the ages of eight and 18 years old, doing extraordinary things in their communities or around the world to better the lives of others. Now through February 28, entries are being accepted for the 2011 search for Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes. Ten Huggable Heroes will be selected and each will be awarded with a $7,500 educational scholarship and a $2,500 donation to the 501 (c)(3) charity of his/her choice. Entry forms are available at all Build-A-Bear Workshop stores in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, and online at www.lovehugssmiles.com/HuggableHeroes.aspx

Everyday Young Hero Award (Deadline: Ongoing)
Each week, YSA features an Everyday Young Hero in the National Service Briefing. Everyday Young Heroes are youth leaders, ages 5-25, who identify a need in their community, address it through service, mobilize their peers and community partners, and engage the media and elected officials. Everyday Young Hero Award winners receive a certificate and award letter, and will be featured on YSA's website and in the National Service Briefing. Youth selected as Everyday Young Heroes are also considered for YSA's other awards, including YSA Service Stars and the Harris Wofford Award.

The Maryland 4-H Horse Art Contest was recently held in conjunction with MD Horse World Expo. We had a record number of entries this year with 130 entries overall. 2011 Video Contest, Rules of the Road

The Maryland State Bar Association is accepting submissions for its 2011 Video Contest, Rules of the Road. Videos will be accepted until April 1, 2011. Information can be found at www.msba.org/?videocontest.

To enter, participants are encouraged to create a 1-3 minute video about the importance of the Rules of the Road. The video can portray and number of the Rules, including those affecting drivers, passengers, bicyclists, pedestrians or any other component of traffic safety.

The winners will be selected based on originality, creativity, adherence to the theme and overall quality. Cash Prizes will be awarded to the Top Three videos (First Place- $500, Second Place- $300, Third Place- $200).

We Can Change the World Challenge (Deadline: March 15, 2011 - Activities Take 3-12 Weeks to Complete)

As citizens and future stewards of our planet, today's students are in a unique position to become active agents of environmental change. Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge - Encourages students from grades K-12 to team up with their classmates to create replicable solutions to environmental issues in their schools (grades K to five), community (grades six to eight) and world (grades nine to 12). The goal of the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge is to do more than jus­t give kids a chance to formulate an experiment and carry it out. Contestants explore an environmental problem that affects their community. As part of the challenge, students must also put together guidelines for how other communities could repeat the project, and they share those guidelines as part of th­e contest. National 4-H Conference

Our National 4-H Conference team is preparing for their trip to the National 4-H Conferencing Center in early April. Special thanks to Cynthia Warner for serving as a chaperone for our team. Also thanks to the UME Community Leadership / Civic Engagement Impact Team for coordinating with us to make the experience for our National 4-H Conference Team and their visits to Capitol Hill a joint visit with our Maryland PILD team.

2011 State Communications Contest

Just a few months away the 2011 State Communications Contest will again be at Maryland Day on Saturday, April 30th. We look forward to an opportunity to showcase our 4-Hers and their speaking accomplishments to the entire University Community! Encourage your county champions to enter the state contest. The on-line transmittal form is due April 1st – if you county/city event is after that date please let the State Office know that you will be entering youth after your contest.

We need lots of Helpers/Judges. We would welcome youth helpers that day – perhaps the reserve champions would like to come and help and if for some reason the champion does not attend – we’d be glad to let the reserve champ give their speeches. We need dozens of judges – so please send corridon@umd.edu names and contact information of potential judges.

Food Preservation Workshop

The FoodSmart Impact Team Train the Trainer Training on February 24, 2011Time: 9:00 a.m. till 3:30 p.m Food Preservation Training is filled to capacity SO- there will be a repeat of this training on Monday, March 21st at the Queen Anne’s County 4-H Park. This Training for UME Faculty will offer hands on instruction with the latest research and recommendations. PLEASE sign up if you plan to support the youth within your programs that do canning. You will get lots of resources for your registration fee for the training AND you’ll go home with some canned goods that you – yourself prepared using the latest recommended practices!
