Human Science Update – Let’s MOVE

State Purchase Power 2011

It’s coming!! Our 2011 Purchase Power resources will be released next Friday – if you have youth interested in having a “judging” experience this consumer skill building program is for your 4-H youth! Consumer Judging originated as a program for youth who were interested in consumer purchasing and the decision making process in making those wise choices. So – like the other “judging” events this program offers a group of categories to study and then make decisions/rankings based established criterion. Get youth involved in consumer skill building this summer and culminate this learning at the Maryland State Fair Consumer Judging Contest. The topics this year are: Peanut Butter / Pots & Pans (focusing on different surfaces: cast iron, Farberware, Dupont finishes/etc. and how they can be used/cleaned, etc) Kitchen Utensils – will be the ID class/ Beach Towels and Dairy Products – your calcium connection.

If you have questions about the Purchase Power Program – How to Judge a Class/ Scoring/etc. we will have power point presentations that will be linked on our Human Science page with the class information. We had 5 counties participate last year – Carroll County has historically had a wonderful, strong, successful program – and even has a county contest – often as a part of their county fair – this would be an EXCELLENT opportunity for other county/city groups to participate in as a “practice” prior to the Maryland State Fair. Hone your consumer skills – check out the 2011 Purchase Power program – any questions contact Sandy corridon@umd.edu

State 4-H Communications Contest

Again MANY thanks to the 21 of our 24 units for encouraging your 4-H youth to participate in this life skill building event! All of the ribbons and score sheets for the 2011 State Communications Contest have been sent to the youth who were unable to stay for the Presentation of Awards, and as mentioned before – the Final Program with Champions and Reserve Champions listed is available on the Human Sciences page of our website. Now is the time to continue to engage those young people to utilize their speaking skills at your county/city events and we’d welcome them at the Maryland State Fair – 4-H Presents on stage or as narrators for the State Fashion Revue.

New Booklet on Women’s Health Issues

We are fortunate to have resources constantly offered to challenge us live a healthy lifestyle. Here is another such resource. Local FTC Alliance Brings Home Division Title

The Garrett County 4-H FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams returned from the FIRST World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri with more awards. After two days of qualifying matches, the 4-H Techno Clovers finished 4th in the Edison Division with a record of 6-1. They selected the Flaming Cup Noodles from Portland, Oregon and their sister team G-FORCE to be their alliance partners. The alliance won the first two games easily over the number one seed alliance. Then unfortunately they lost the next two very close rounds. The Techno, Noodles, and G-FORCE teams were awarded the Edison Division Finalist Award (2nd place in their division). G-FORCE was also nominated for the Connect Award for their outreach into the community.

Team members will continue their community outreach working with robotics throughout the summer with SuGO events on the first Sunday of each month at GEARS in Accident, MD (http://sugo.gearsinc.org/). They will also be mentoring at the summer Technology Camps sponsored by the Garrett County Board of Education (http://cardinal.ga.k12.md.us/TechCamp/default.htm). Others will be involved in helping with robotic events at the county and state fairs.

The teams would like to thank all the many individuals and business supporters that made this once-in-a-lifetime experience possible. While in St. Louis the families traveled to the top of the St. Louis Gateway Arch, but unfortunately the flooding canceled their Riverboat Tour on the Mississippi. The families were also invited to the National 4-H Council breakfast and had the opportunity to talk with Council members, Trustees and corporate sponsors. “This was a great opportunity for the youth and parents to share their excitement with corporate CEOs and 4-H trustees, and explain how being a part of this robotic team has helped them built team work, public speaking, and citizenship life skills along with hands-on science, technology, and engineering skills.” stated mentor Arlene Lantz. The team members would also like to thank their parents and team mentors who have worked with them each week to, “Make the Best Better.”

The FTC teams would also like to congratulate the local NeXT GEN FLL team that was awarded 3rd place Strategies and Innovation Robot Award and the GaCo FRC team that was awarded the Inspiration and Engineering Award at the World Championship. Congratulations to all teams on an outstanding season!
