Awards and Recognition

Unit 4 Introduction

Everyone likes to be recognized for a job well done and 4-Hers are no exception. Recognition is an excellent motivator, even when it’s just an encouraging word or a pat on the back. We all like to be congratulated when we’ve been successful, that’s just human nature.

awardsRecognition is most effective when received soon after the accomplishment and from someone the recipient respects. At the club level, often what’s most important is the recognition is timely and sincere. It’s appropriate to recognize the efforts of younger members but older members should be recognized for achievement. Clovers may like participation ribbons but teens usually do not.

Many of today’s young people expect immediate gratification. This presents a challenge for 4-H as most current forms of member recognition happens long after the achievement. For example, most 4-H Unit awards programs are held at the end of the 4-H year and sometimes well into the next 4-H year. When young people are recognized long after their achievement much of the motivational benefit is lost. Younger members often do not understand why they are being recognized. Club leaders should consider celebrating their member’s accomplishments soon after the achievement. The recognition need not be elaborate but should be something the members enjoy and value. Ask your members the type of recognition they like best. Celebrating your members may be an excellent task for your teen volunteers.

Thoughts on Effective Recognition

1. Recognition is most appreciated when received soon after the achievement.

2. The form of recognition must be something the recipient values.

3. Recognize the true achievers as generic group recognition has little meaning.

4. Recognition should be commensurate with the accomplishment. A major accomplishment requires a substantial award, not a ribbon or photocopied certificate.
